30 Years of Guernsey Museum

The museum in Candie Gardens has been the flagship of our service for 30 years and one of the ways we will be marking the anniversary is with a series of displays in the museum's foyer area.

During Childhood Memories we will be showcasing a fine and interesting selection of items from the Corbet Collection of Guernsey pottery. In 2006 Canadian painter and sculptor Christian Cardell Corbet generously donated 80 select pieces of pottery to Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery. These items, all made by Guernsey Pottery, were from his own personal collection, acquired over a 25 year period.

Toplis and the Book of Sark

William Arthur Toplis (1857-1942) was born and studied art in Sheffield and arrived in Sark in 1883. He spent the rest of his life in the island, painting its rugged coastline, often in extraordinary detail. In 1908, in collaboration with John Oxenham, a local author and journalist who provided descriptive text, Toplis used prints from 21 of his own paintings to illustrate the Book of Sark. This lavish, limited edition picture book was in many ways ahead of its time, though probably not a commercial success. Our exhibition will celebrate the centenary of its publication, and the inspirational value of the scenery it depicts.

Caparne Works This Way

William John Caparne was a prolific artist who sketched wherever he went, recording not just shapes but colour information as well. We are fortunate to have a substantial collection of his sketches and this exhibition will shed some light on the way he worked, from sketch to finished picture.
