From the New World

Limited Edition Prints of North American Natural History subjects, in association with Alecto Historical Editions.

In 1712 and 1722, the English naturalist Mark Catesby made two trips across the Atlantic to record the Flora and Fauna of the 'New World' British colonies. He drew from life and produced remarkable images which often depicted associated plants and animals - an innovation at the time. On his return to England he published his Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first authoritative guide to area, with etchings derived from his watercolours. Later, his original drawings were acquired by King George III for the Royal Library and have only recently been published in facsimile by Alecto.

In addition to the Catesby prints, the exhibition includes relevant North American items from the Guille-Allès Collection, including the magnificent Birds of America by John James Audubon.

Echoes From the Past -THE CASTLE SURRENDERS 1651

‘Echoes From The Past’ tell the story of the events at Castle Cornet on the 350th anniversary of the surrender of Castle Cornet at the end of the English Civil War:

It is the 17th of December 1651. Castle Cornet’s Royalist garrison prepare to surrender to the Parliamentarian forces in Guernsey on the 19th. It is the end.

Five members of the garrison, some have been here since 1642, discuss amongst themselves the years spent in the Castle under siege.

They look back over the years to recount various events during the castle’s stand for the king - the bombardment of St Peter Port; the capture of the three prominent Parliamentarians and their subsequent escape; the problems of supplying the Castle; their associations with the Royalist garrison of Jersey and their driving off of a Parliamentarian attack in March 1651.

Regardless of their many hardships, short of food supplies and water, they have fought hard and honourably but now they ponder their fate. What is to become of them, how will they be treated?
