Guernsey Museums & Galleries has offered local students an opportunity to exhibit their best works for many years. The quality of the paintings, pastels, textiles, sculptures and ceramics on view has increased steadily over the years and the 1999 - 2000 exhibition promises to exceed all expectations. This is a rare opportunity to see some fine examples in a variety of media by some of the island’s best students and artists of the future.

March 11th - April 16th - The B. G. WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR EXHIBITION

April  19th - May 28th "Paintings from the Permanent Collection"

This whole of our temporary exhibition space will be devoted to a display of pictures from the permanent collection.

  

March 30th - Fort Grey Shipwreck Museum and Castle Cornet and its Museums - Re-open for the 1999 Summer Season.

To celebrate the Easter holidays and Bank Holidays during April and May, the staff at Fort Grey and the Guernsey Museum may be found dressed in historical Guernsey costume.

April 15th -17th Gallery Interpreters "Platform 4" will be giving live performances exploring the story of ‘The Sinking of the Stella’.

"What’s On" in MAY and JUNE 2000

May 1st October 31st - Soldiers of the Queen A touring exhibition on loan from 'The Thin Red Line'.

An exhibition showing the development of the British army uniforms during the reign of Queen Victoria, from the Crimean War to the Boer War.

Continuing until  May 28th "Paintings from the Permanent Collection"

This whole of our temporary exhibition space will be devoted to a display of pictures from the permanent collection.

 

May 31st – June 21st - ‘PRINTERS INC. A touring exhibition from the Arts Council of England.
Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery

This exhibition presents recent prints by 21 contemporary British artists, several of whom have gained international recognition. 

There is no theme to the exhibition, although humour is central to several of the images, whilst others have ironical or thought-provoking texts.  The techniques employed by the artists are divers, ranging from woodcut, to screenprint to letterpress.

Artists in the exhibition include Helen Chadwick, Mat Collishaw, Joshua Compston, Adam Dant, Grenville Davey, Dominic Denis, Tracey Emin, Angus Fairhurst, Andrew Herman, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Michael Landy, Nicholas May, Julian Opie, Marc Quinn, Emma Smith, Marcus Taylor, Gavin Turk, Rachel Whiteread, Max Wigram and Craig Wood.

 

Saturday 10th June  - THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY
All three sites
- Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, Castle Cornet and Fort Grey

Each year, on this day Guernsey Museums & Galleries offer FREE ENTRY to all its sites. A 21 gun salute is fired from Castle Cornet, accompanied by the Guernsey Concert Band and the Elizabeth College Cadets. At Fort Grey and the Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery staff dress in costume and host a number of special events. See the local Press for details.

June 13th, 14th & 18th - ECHOES FROM THE PAST - ‘The Reluctant Recruits’
(No performances on June 15th)

It is 1807. An English Sergeant has been seconded to the West regiment of the Guernsey Militia. His duties are to instruct new recruits in musket drill and other things military. But who is in charge – the English Sergeant or the Guernsey recruits? Two recruits in particular are not quite as he expects – substitutes come in all shapes and sizes!

 June 16th, 17th & 19th - ECHOES FROM THE PAST - ‘The sinking of the Boreas 1807’
Fort Grey, Rocquaine

‘Echoes From The Past’ tell the story of the loss of HMS Boreas commanded by Guernsey man Admiral de Saumarez, which struck the Hanois reef in a storm in 1807 with the loss of 127 men.

July 6th – January 2001 -  ART FOR THE MILLENNIUM ‘Future Memories’ EXHIBITION

On July 6th 2000 Guernsey Museums & Galleries opens one of the biggest and most wide ranging displays of art ever mounted in Guernsey.

The ART FOR THE MILLENNIUM ‘Future Memories’ EXHIBITION aims to offer future generations a real picture of who we are, where we are and what we care about, at this moment in history.

The works submitted for this celebration of local art will be produced during 1999-2000 by artists with close connections to the Bailiwick of Guernsey. All works will be considered by an international Jury of respected artists and critics for the generous prizes in each category donated by NM Rothschild & Sons. The most distinguished work in the exhibition will receive the top award of £2000.

The exhibition, to be held in and around Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, will be accompanied by a high quality Art for the Millennium ‘Future Memories’ Commemorative Catalogue.

On the last night of the St Peter Port Town Carnival, Castle Cornet offers free admittance to the castle from 6pm - 10pm
The carnival firework display begins at 10pm.

THE TEMPEST by William Shakespeare, performed by The Festival Players Theatre Company. 

Villains and extraordinary visions make this play, probably the last great work of the Bard, into an evening of suspense and magic. Castle Cornet - an island in itself - is the perfect setting for this special Millennium production.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST by Oscar Wilde, performed by "Illyria"

Now in their ninth open-air touring season, internationally acclaimed Illyria perform their first adult non-Shakespeare play. They invite audiences to enjoy a performance in the company of Oscar Wilde's masterpiece of wit, manners and sly innuendo.
